How Online Predators Target Children — What Every Parent Needs to Know

The internet has opened up incredible opportunities for learning and connection — but it has also created new dangers for children and youth. Online predators are increasingly using social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps to gain the trust of young people and exploit them.

Watch this important video to understand how it happens and what you can do to protect the children in your life:

How Predators Operate Online

Predators rarely use force. Instead, they rely on trust, manipulation, and grooming — a gradual process of building a relationship with a child before exploiting them. Common tactics include:

  • Posing as peers — pretending to be a child or teenager to gain trust
  • Flattery and gifts — offering compliments, gift cards, or in-game items to create dependency
  • Isolation — encouraging children to keep the relationship secret from parents and friends
  • Exploiting emotions — targeting children who feel lonely, misunderstood, or are going through difficult times
  • Moving to private platforms — shifting conversations from public apps to private messaging to avoid detection

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Your child becomes secretive about their online activity
  • They receive unexpected gifts, money, or packages
  • They withdraw from family and friends
  • They use devices late at night or become upset when device access is restricted
  • They use language or reference topics that seem beyond their age

How to Protect Your Child

  • Keep communication open — create a safe space where your child feels comfortable telling you anything
  • Know their online world — be aware of the apps, games, and platforms they use
  • Set boundaries — establish screen time rules and keep devices in common areas
  • Educate early — teach children about online safety, privacy, and what to do if someone makes them uncomfortable
  • Report suspicious activity — contact the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children CyberTipline or call 1-800-THE-LOST
